A new Warhol auction record has been broken in the art world!
Sotheby’s conducted an auction Wednesday that included a prized 1963 Andy Warhol painting that captures the aftermath of a car crash. The painting sold for $105 million. The buyer of this record breaking Andy Warhol print has not been identified by Sotheby’s.
This Warhol painting has been out of the public eye for quite some time. It has only been seen once in the past 26 years. The work is titled “Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)” that measures 8-by-13-foot . In this piece, a twisted body is depicted across a car’s mangled interior.
The previous Warhol auction record was set in 2007 when “Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I)” sold for $71.7 million. The initial estimate for “Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)” was $80 million, making the sale an enormous success.
“The demand for seminal works by historical important artists is truly unquestionable, and we will keep witnessing new records being broken,” said Michael Frahm, a contemporary art adviser and partner at the London-based Frahm Ltd.
