Gaultney, Klineman Art, Inc.

Gaultney, Klineman Art, Inc. was a publishing house in New York City. In 1986, they published Andy Warhol’s Cowboys and Indians series. One of Warhol’s most popular series from his later career, the series contains portraits of various American heroes–John Wayne, Annie Oakley, Teddy Roosevelt, and General George Custer–in addition to less familiar Native American images. Warhol looks at the history of the West through the lens of pop culture, focusing on the commercialization of the Wild West and tropes of Western movies, making the viewer consider the place of these images in American history and identity.
