Andy Warhol was commissioned in 1976 by the Democratic National Committee to make paintings of then-presidential candidate Jimmy Carter. Through commissioning Warhol, the DNC hoped to reach a younger audience and position themselves as a more progressive party. In the series, Carter is shown staring at the viewer seriously and in another, smiling happily, showing the duality of the political figure. Triumphantly, and perhaps thanks to Warhol’s prints, Jimmy Carter ended up winning the election.
